The cherished British tradition of Afternoon Tea became fashionable in the 1840s thanks to Duchess Anna Maria, the wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford. With dinner served late in the evening, she introduced a light afternoon meal to bridge the long gap between lunch and supper — and a wonderful social tradition was born.
